Expectations for Students Using the Course Policy Adjustment Accommodation Effectively

This accommodation may only be implemented for the disability/medical/health reason on record with the DRO. Use of this accommodation for other reasons will not be supported by the DRO, including health matters not on record, seasonal colds and flu, or other non-medical related reasons Students should contact the Absence Verification Office for unrelated absences.

Timely and effective communication with professors and DRO is required for the use of this accommodation. Please note, this accommodation may not be reasonable in all courses as professors are required to uphold Department/College educational requirements and standards. Until a Course Policy Adjustment plan is finalized, students are expected to follow the policy as stated in the course syllabus and contact the professor and DRO if concerns arise during that time.  

**Important: Do not wait until after you miss coursework or class to discuss barriers with the DRO or your professors. 

DRO believes that time and project management skills as well as effective decision-making relative to personal circumstances is important for all students. This accommodation does not address inefficiencies in these areas. Thus, the DRO’s position is that assignments with more than one week to complete can be done successfully with proper time management, as well as planning, and need not warrant an accommodation except in extenuating circumstances. Other options, such as a medical withdrawal, may need to be discussed in certain situations. Responsibility for completing all class work within specified time frames is always in effect.  

For this accommodation, it is pertinent the student:

  • Read all emails pertaining to the accommodation and respond in a timely manner as necessary.  eview each course’s approved plan and respond as necessary.  
  • Follow the process precisely to utilize the accommodation.  
  • Contact DRO and professors as soon as you experience substantial interruptions that may impact your course involvement.
