Large Print

Large print can be produced in the academic department by using a computer and selecting a large-size, bold font. When computer enlargement is not possible, a photocopier can enlarge to 11″ X 17″ paper. Make sure the contrast is good. Use white paper and black lettering. Make sure the ink coverage is dense and avoid glossy paper. The DRO will not process any requests for alternate format materials prior to registration in the course. The DRO does not provide alternate format materials for personal use or study (Section 504, 104.44(d)(2)). Responsibilities are as follows:

Instructor

  • Provide large print copies of all handouts, slides, overheads, etc., for student use during the class lecture or discussion.
  • Whenever possible produce large print format at your academic department.
  • If the department cannot provide large print materials, the instructor should contact the DRO.

Instructions for Producing Large Print Materials Via Software:
In the appropriate application (MS Word, Corel WordPerfect, etc.) select the text and items to be enlarged. Choose the appropriate font and size (Arial Black – 18pt Is the DRO standard for low-vision students.) Then reformat the material to best reflect the intent of its original appearance.

Via Photocopier:
The best way to enlarge materials on a copy machine is to go from letter (8.5x”) to ledger (11×17″) size paper. For materials that fill a letter-sized page, the standard enlargement is 1.294%. For materials that do not fill a letter-sized page, enlarge in increasing increments until you fill the ledger-sized page.

Student

  • Large print materials are usually provided by the academic department.
  • The Alternate Format Request Form should be completed and submitted two weeks prior to the class due date. Materials that are particularly difficult to enlarge may take longer.
  • The DRO does not provide large print textbooks; however, students can request electronic format that can be enlarged.

 DRO

  • Provide large print format for course materials that cannot be produced in the academic department with existing equipment.
