Braille

Braille is a tactile reading system that uses embossed dots. The DRO uses Duxbury translation software to emboss course materials into Braille. The DRO also has Power Braille 40 refreshable Braille display unit, Braille-N-Speak note-takers, Type-N-Speak note-takers, and a Blazie Engineering Braille Blazer portable embosser available for checkout for student or departmental use. The DRO will not process any requests for alternate format materials prior to registration in the course. The DRO does not provide alternate format materials for personal use or study (Section 504, 104.44(d)(2)). Responsibilities are as follows:

Instructor

  • Provide syllabus and any other course materials in electronic format to the DRO at least two weeks before the start of the semester so Braille can be obtained or produced on time.
  • Since the translation software imports directly from ASCII, Microsoft Word 97 or earlier, Word Perfect 8.0 or earlier, HTML, LaTex, and ICADD, these are the preferred formats.

Student

  • Obtain the books, copies of syllabi, and course materials well in advance of the start of the semester.
  • Review materials and obtain additional information from instructor as needed prior to making your request.
  • Complete an Alternate Format Request Form. The DRO can provide assistance in completing the form.
  • Provide course materials to the DRO one month prior to the due date. Materials that are particularly difficult to convert, such as Nemeth Code and tactile graphics, may take longer.
  • The DRO can produce Braille much more efficiently if materials are submitted in electronic format. The translation software imports directly from ASCII, Microsoft Word 97 or earlier, Word Perfect 8.0 or earlier, HTML, LaTex, and ICADD, so these are preferred formats.
  • When an entire textbook is required for effective access, the DRO attempts to obtain Braille format from organizations or vendors. Visit the National Federation of the Blind for a Braille Transcription Resource List. The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped also has an Internet Web-Braille System. ghBraille is another transcription services with information online include.
